Social Networking Opinion Collumn

I believe schools should allow the use of social networking sites to help students learn how to use them properly. Students are going to use the sites on their phones and iPods anyways. Since they will be exposed to it they should be taught how to use the sites the correct way. Teachers can make the sites useful in education by posting reminders for tests and assignments. They can also have students publish their work online.

These days we have students of all ages using technology like iPads. Those iPads are useful in making learning fun for younger kids. So why can’t learning be made more fun for older students as well. I think social media scares adults. It makes them want to ban it to “protect” us. Little do they know that they could be hindering our learning.

I believe that teaches and parents do not want us to use those sites because they become addicting. But if we could use them, and learn how to use them, correctly then we would be better prepared for the next technology tidal wave. We would be better educated and know not to abuse the privilege of the social networking sites.

I also believe that if teachers use these sites for posting work (like Facebook) it challenges students to do their own, original work. If it is on a social site where many people will view it then the student has to make sure that the work is original or they could get in trouble. If one of my teachers had me publish something that way I would make it the best quality of work that I could possibly do because it is going to be able to be viewed by more people then just my teacher.

I believe Facebook and social networking sites are, in some ways, educational. I believe that students can learn more from teachers who use these sites then teachers who do not use the sites. The technology tidal wave we are on can help us if we learn how to use social media and social networking properly.

Research

I started out my story idea being based on why social networking sites aren’t allowed in schools. I wanted to find schools that did allow it and what problems it might cause for them in school. I was able to find schools that did and didn’t allow social networking. Recently I did an interview that changed my persective and altered my angle slightly. Now I’m focusing on how social networking sites could be used if they had an educational purpose as well as why they aren’t allowed in school. I have completed three interviews total and am continuing my research. I hope to get a couple more interviews in during and after break as well as continue researching and contacting people for my story. My current goal is to have at least one more interview done and my rough draft started if not done by the end the second week after we return from break. If I can keep to that schedual I’m sure I will be able to finish my story on time and make it as great as I want it to be. I am eager to write my opinion part after finishing my story. I already know where I stand and I think I will be able to write a lot and really let my words flow. I admit I have a lot of research to do and will be spending a lot of time over break but I feel like I can get this done and make it my best story I’ve written this year out of all of them.

Deception: Real, Fake, Unnecessary?

I dont think deception is right at all. If the medias job is to tell the truth then why do they deceive people? I wouldnt like being lied to or deceived just for someone to get a story out of me.

Deception is a big part of our world. I get that. But with deception comes consequences. The biggest problem is the modeling industry. They deceive you and make you think how skinny the models look is how skinny every girl should be to be perfect when in reality those models are not perfect. It can lead to eating disorders and other problems in teens.

Tv is a big player in deception as well. The news media deceives you on stories and political things.

Political deception is common especially in presidential ads. It isnt hard to find deception and its wrong. Deceiving someone is lying to them and lying is wrong. So i dont believe deception should be allowed in media at all.
